#ERIC_BURDON, Happy Birthday – Eric Burdon will be 80 years old on May 11, 2021. In 2004 he recorded the song #In_My_Secret_Life by Leonard Cohen. The title track of “My Secret Life”, was recorded because “Leonard Cohen’s always been one of my all-time favourite singer/songwriters”, Eric says. “There were so many of his songs I wanted to cover but I think this one takes the biscuit”.

In 2004 the album „My Secret Life“ was released as his „comeback album“. During promotional discussions at the time, he explained why he called the album that: “Shortly before it was released, I was listening to an album by Leonard Cohen in the middle of the night that contained the song“ In my Secret Life „. I went back to the studio and decided to include this 13th track on the album and also to name it after the song. In 1997 I photographed Eric Burdon for the Trier newspaper “Trierischer Volksfreund” in Germany.

In 2004 the British rock / blues singer, who celebrated the biggest hit of his 60 years stage career with “House of the Rising Sun” and his band The Animals, appeared on German television at ARD – ROCKPALAST and also performed Leonard Cohen’s “In My Secret Life „.

When Cohen died in 2016, Eric Burdon posted on his socials: “ Very sad to hear of the passing of LEONARD COHEN. R.I.P”. – Happy Birthday, Eric Burdon !

2004 wurde das damalige Album „My Secret Life“ als sein „Comeback-Album“ veröffentlicht. In damaligen Promotion-Gesprächen erzählte er, warum er das Album so nannte: „Kurz vor der Veröffentlichung hörte ich mitten in der Nacht ein Album von Leonard Cohen an, auf dem das Lied „In my Secret Life“ enthalten war. Ich ging zurück ins Studio und beschloss diesen 13. Titel auf das Album aufzunehmen und es auch nach dem Song zu nennen. 1997 fotografierte ich Eric Burdon für die Tageszeitung in Trier „Trierischer Volksfreund“.

2004 trat der britische Rock/ Blues Sänger, der mit „House of the Rising Sun“ und seiner Band The Animals den größten Hit seiner bisher 60 Jahre Bühnen-Karriere feierte, beim ARD – ROCKPALAST im deutschen Fernsehen auf und performte auch Leonard Cohens „In My Secret Life“.

Als Cohen 2016 starb, postete Eric Burdon auf seinen Socials: “ Very sad to hear of the passing of LEONARD COHEN. R.I.P”. – Happy Birthday, Eric Burdon.

Leonard Cohen, The Modern Troubadour

Zusammenfassung/ Abstract:

This dissertation thesis arose from thinking about literary tradition as described by the Anglo-American modernists Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot. In their view, the tradition of European love-lyrics crystallised in the work of the medieval Occitan troubadours who were influenced by the cultural and political milieu of the contemporary Occitanie and whose work reflected the religious influences of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The main subject of their poetry was the worship of the divinised feminine character resembling the Christian Virgin Mary, Gnostic Sophia or the ancient Mother Goddess. In the course of his career, Leonard Cohen has revealed erudition in medieval poetry and religion and a penchant for modernist thinking. Moreover, his work shows many parallels with the work of his Occitan predecessors. The thesis deals with comparison of texts and motifs present in their works with references to religion and mysticism.
