Aufgewachsen in der Bronx, lernte er bereits als Kind Klavier spielen. Ein TV-Auftritt der Beatles in der legendären Ed Sullivan-Show prägte ihn und seine Musik entscheidend. 1949     William Martin Joel is born in the Bronx, NY. on May 9. The family moves to the Levittown section of Hicksville on Long Island where he spends his childhood and young adult years.

1953     Begins studying piano.

1963     Joins his first band, The Echoes, later known as The Lost Souls.

1967     Joins The Hassles, a Long Island-based band, and records the The Hassles, the first of two albums for United Artists,.

1968     The Hassles record their second album Hour of the Wolf.

1970     Forms Attila, a heavy metal duo with Hassles‘ drummer, Jon Small. Attila records one album on Epic Records.

1971     Signs a solo recording contract and releases his first album, Cold Spring Harbor.

Commences a world tour with his band to promote Cold Spring Harbor.

Disappears to the West Coast as a result of a contractual dispute, where he performs in piano bars under the name Bill Martin.

1972     WMMR-FM, a radio station in Philadelphia, starts playing a tape of a new song, ‘Captain Jack,’ taken from a live concert broadcast.

Although he does his best to keep a low profile in Los Angeles, the notoriety of ‘Captain Jack’ prompts Columbia Records to track him down and offer him a recording contract.

1973     He is signed to Columbia Records by the legendary Clive Davis and records the album Piano Man in Los Angeles.

1974     The song ‘Piano Man’ becomes his first top 20 single & first gold album.

1975     Records Streetlife Serenade in Los Angeles. The album garners the first of many music industry awards to come, including a Cashbox award for Best New Male Vocalist.

Begins to gather recognition as a live concert attraction as a result of extensive touring, culminating in a sell-out concert performance at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall

1976     Returns to New York, assembles a new band and records Turnstiles. Embarks on his first headline concert tour.

1977     Writes, records and releases The Stranger, his first collaboration with producer Phil Ramone. From the time of its release in 1977 until 1985, The Stranger is Columbia Records’ biggest selling album

1978     The song ‘Just the Way You Are’ captures two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Releases 52nd St. which becomes his first #1 album.

1979     Travels to Cuba for Havana Jam, an historic three day event at the Karl Marx Theater.

Headlines a benefit concert for the Long Island based Charity Begins At Home.

1980     Glass Houses reaches #1 on the Billboard Album Chart and remains there for six weeks. ‘It’s Still Rock N Roll to Me’ becomes his first #1 single.

Receives an American Music Award for Album of the Year.

1981     Wins Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male at the 1981 Grammy Awards, as well as a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Male Pop Performer.

Releases a live album, Songs in the Attic, which becomes his fourth consecutive top ten album.

1982     Sustains serious injury to both hands in a motorcycle accident while recording the The Nylon Curtain. After a two month recovery period, the album is completed. The Nylon Curtain reaches #7 on the Billboard Album Chart and earns a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

1983     Writes and records the album An Innocent Man which reaches #4 on the Billboard charts and is nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The album generates six Top 40 singles, three of which make it to the Top 10, including ‘Uptown Girl’ which receives a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.

Columbia Records re-releases Cold Spring Harbor.

1985     Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II is released and becomes his seventh consecutive top 10 album. ‘You’re Only Human (Second Wind)’ becomes his eighth Top 10 single.

Joins fellow musicians John Mellencamp and Randy Newman for Farm Aid I, and participates in USA For Africa.

Marries model Christie Brinkley. Their daughter Alexa Ray is born at the end of the year.

The Bridge album is released featuring collaborations with Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper, and Steve Winwood.

1987     Becomes the first U.S. pop star to bring a full rock production to the Soviet Union. He performs in Moscow and in Leningrad. The two-disc live album Kohuept (the Russian word for concert) is released in October.

Having sold more than 150 million records, Billy Joel ranks as one of most popular recording artists and respected entertainers in the world. Throughout the years, Joel’s songs have acted as personal and cultural touchstones for millions of people, mirroring his own goal of writing songs that „meant something during the time in which I lived … and transcended that time.”

Billy Joel has had 33 Top 40 hits and 23 Grammy nominations since signing his first solo recording contract in 1972. In 1990, he was presented with a Grammy Legend Award. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, Joel was presented with the Johnny Mercer Award, the organization’s highest honor, in 2001. In 1999 he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and has received the Recording Industry Association of America Diamond Award, presented for albums that have sold over 10 million copies.

In November, 2014, Billy Joel will receive The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which honors living musical artists whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with George and Ira Gershwin, by promoting the genre of song as a vehicle of cultural understanding; entertaining and informing audiences; and inspiring new generations. Also in November, 2014, Billy will receive the once-in-a-century ASCAP Centennial Award. This is presented to American music icons in recognition of their incomparable accomplishments in their respective music genres and beyond.

December 2013, Madison Square Garden announced Billy Joel as the first-ever music franchise of “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” Joining the ranks of The Garden’s other original franchises – including the New York Knicks, Rangers and Liberty – Billy Joel kicked off this franchise at The Garden performing a show a month, as long as there is demand, starting January 27, 2014. Since his first show in 1978, Billy has performed 46 shows at Madison Square Garden, including an unprecedented 12 consecutive sold-out shows that have earned Billy a spot among the Garden greats with a banner raised in his honor.

Also in December 2013, Billy Joel received the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honor, one of the United States‘ top cultural awards. At The ceremony, Don Henley sang the classic ballad, “She’s Got a Way.” Also paying homage was Garth Brooks, who performed a medley of „Allentown“ and „Goodnight Saigon“ and Rufus Wainwright who performed two Joel classics, „New York State of Mind“ and „Piano Man.“ Brendan Urie performed „Big Shot.“ Tony Bennett introduced the tribute.

Joel held his first ever indoor Irish concert at the O2 in Dublin on November 1, 2013. He also returned to the UK for the first time in seven years and played two arena dates in Manchester and Birmingham plus a very special – more intimate – show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. In October 2013, Billy Joel held a surprise concert on Long Island at The Paramount (Huntington, NY) to benefit Long Island Cares. On December 31, 2013, Billy performed at The Barclays Center.

In 2013, Billy Joel held tens of thousands of visitors to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the palm of his hand. It was Joel’s second full-length show in three years He went to New Orleans fresh from Sydney, Australia, where he played a full set at the Stone Music Festival.

Joel and his band prepared a similar array of Joel’s huge collection of hits for Sydney and New Orleans, and mixed in some handpicked tunes specific to the venue at hand. Joel told the crowd, „we know how you felt“ since last year’s Hurricane Sandy, referring to Hurricane Katrina, which hit New Orleans in 2005. „We’re trying to rebuild. We’re taking inspiration from you guys.“

New York’s quintessential son, Billy Joel, performed six songs at the historic 12.12.12 The Concert For Sandy Relief, joining other music greats including Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and more to raise awareness and money to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. The show, which included tributes to first responders and those affected by the storm, was broadcast to an estimated 2 billion viewers and raised $32 million in funds before anyone took the stage. Billy, who is proud of his personal connection to Long Island and the tri-state area impacted by the storm, told the audience, „We’re going to get through all this. This is New York and New Jersey and Long Island, and we’re just too mean to lay down and die.“

Billy Joel was honored by Steinway & Sons with a painted portrait that hangs in Steinway Hall in Manhattan. Joel, who has been a Steinway Artist for almost 20 years, is the first non-classical pianist to be immortalized in the Steinway Hall collection. His portrait hangs alongside those of legendary musicians including Sergei Rachmaninoff, Franz Liszt, Arthur Rubinstein, Ignacy Paderewski, and more. The portrait of Billy Joel, painted by artist and musician Paul Wyse, is one of only two living artists to be inducted into the collection, the other being Leon Fleisher. In 2010, Joel released “The Last Play at Shea. The intersecting histories of a city, a team, and a music legend are examined in a documentary feature film that charts both the ups and downs of the New York Mets and the life and career of Long Island native Billy Joel, the last performer to play Shea Stadium before its demolition in 2008. Energetically set to the soundtrack of Joel’s final Shea concert, “The Last Play At Shea” interweaves personal and candid Joel interviews with concert footage-with guests such as Sir Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, Steven Tyler, John Mayer, Don Henley, Roger Daltrey – the history of Shea, and the birth of the Mets.

In 2004, Billy Joel received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, adding another milestone to his extraordinary career. „Movin‘ Out,“ a Broadway musical based on Joel’s music choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp, was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and took home two including Best Orchestrations–Billy’s first Tony Award win–and Best Choreography.

In addition to his Grammy Awards, Joel has earned three Awards For Cable Excellence and has received numerous ASCAP and BMI awards including the ASCAP Founders Award and the BMI Career Achievement Award and, in 1994, was given the 1994 Billboard Century Award. Among his many other awards and honors, Billy Joel has been given a Doctor of Humane Letters from Fairfield University (1991), a Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music (1993), and a Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Hofstra University (1997) and a Doctor of Music from Southampton College.

Joel has donated his time and resources to a variety of charitable causes outside the realm of his musical career. A longtime advocate for music education, he first began holding „master class“ sessions on college campuses more than 20 years ago, giving sessions at colleges across the country and around the world. In addition, he has held classes as a benefit for the STAR Foundation (Standing for Truth About Radiation) and to establish the Rosalind Joel Scholarship for the Performing Arts at City College in New York City.

Rock am Ring 2016: Drohende Unwetter bescheren vorzeitiges Ende

Mendig. Rock am Ring 2016. Das erste Mal in der 31jährigen Geschichte des dienstältesten Rock-Festivals Deutschlands standen nicht die Künstler und deren Musik im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Bei der 31. Auflage des Ausnahme-Festivals,  das erstmals vorzeitig beendet wurde, war es die Natur, die im Fokus stand und das Schwert Damokles über das Mega-Event hielt.

Eigentlich hätten „Black Sabbath“ das Finale des dreitägigen Rock-Spektakels am Sonntagabend bestritten. Eigentlich hätten knapp 90 Bands, auf vier Bühnen an drei Tagen auftreten sollen.  Aber zu all dem kam es – erstmals – nicht.

Schon im Vorfeld stand das seit Monaten ausverkaufte Rock-Festival mit 93.000 Zuschauern Rekordbeteiligung im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes unter einem schlechten Stern. Ganzwöchiger Starkregen verwandelte das ehemalige Flughafengelände in der Nordeifel bereits in eine Schlammlandschaft. Und auch die Festival-Opener  „We Came As Romans“ und „Larkin Poe“ am Freitagmittag fanden schon im Wechselbad von brennender Hitze und beginnendem Nieselregen statt. Danach begannen die Unwetterwarnungen. Beim Heavy-Wikinger-Rock von „ Amon Amarth“ kam sogar Ex-Warlock-Frontfrau Doro Pesch beim Song „A Dream That Cannot Be“ zum Duett auf die Bühne. Danach begann das Unwetter. 82 Besucher wurden verletzt, acht von ihnen schwer. „Zwei davon wurden erfolgreich reanimiert“, sagte ein Polizeisprecher am Samstagmorgen. Die Live-Auftritte waren etwa eineinhalb Stunden lang unterbrochen.  Danach gab es ein verkürztes Programm u.a. mit Tenacious D und Volbeat . Weitere Unwetterwarnungen legten das Festival bis Samstag, 21.30 lahm, dann verkündete Veranstalter Marek Lieberberg , dass er für Sonntag keine Spielgenehmigung der Behörden erhalte, was das vorzeitige Aus von „Rock am Ring 2016“ bedeutete.

Alle restlichen Bands des Abendprogramms, allen voran die Headliner „Red Hot Chili Peppers“ traten noch bis in die Morgenstunden des dritten Tages statt. Seit 1985 kann man das Event, das sich seitdem in einem ständigen Verbesserungsprozess befindet,  mit den Worten, „alles bleibt anders“ beschreiben . „Rock am Ring“ hatte in seiner 31jährigen Geschichte schon oft mit klimatischen Widrigkeiten der Eifel zu kämpfen.  1987 gab es vor David Bowie Starkregen. 1997 schlug bei „Supertramp“ einmal der Blitz in die Bühnentechnik und die Toten Hosen spielten wie z.B. 2004 schon oft bei Gewitter. So heftig wie 2016 war es jedoch noch nie. Dieses Mal war wirklich alles anders.  Doch die Entscheidung  zum Abbruch ist richtig: Menschenleben und Sicherheit gehen vor „Rock`n`Roll“. Rock am Ring 2017 findet wieder am ersten Juni-Wochenende statt.

Verbandsgemeinde Mendig entzieht Spielgenehmigung aufgrund drohender Unwetter

Das Open Air Festival Rock am Ring muss vorzeitig nach dem zweiten Veranstaltungstag beendet werden. Aufgrund der Unwetterwarnung für den Sonntag entzog die Verbandsgemeinde Mendig heute die Spielgenehmigung für den finalen Festivaltag am Sonntag. In Verantwortung für das Wohlergehen der Fans akzeptieren die Veranstalter diese Entscheidung. Am ersten Festivaltag waren mehr als 80 Besucher durch Blitzeinschläge zum Teil schwer verletzt und in Krankenhäuser eingeliefert worden. Aufgrund der Gefahrenlage werden die Fans gebeten, nach Beendigung der Auftritte die Heimreise bis spätestens Sonntagmittag 12 Uhr anzutreten.

Die Veranstalter bedauern die Entscheidung außerordentlich, bitten die Fans jedoch um Verständnis in dieser Notsituation.

Live werden VOLBEAT direkt am kommenden Wochenende bei Rock Am Ring und Rock Im Park die Bühne als Headliner an einem der drei Abende rocken!

Über die Jahre haben die Dänen einen unverwechselbaren Sound kreiert. Es gibt absolut niemanden, der auf ähnlich mitreißende Weise Metal und Rock’n’Roll mit hymnischen Chören verbinden kann. Ein Konzept, dem Volbeat eine einmalige Karriere mit Millionen verkauften Alben und unzähligen Auszeichnungen verdanken. Das alles könnte aber nicht funktionieren, wenn Volbeat sich nicht immer wieder hinterfragen und stetig weiterentwickeln würden.

Spätestens seit dem letzten Album sind Volbeat endgültig die erfolgreichste Metal-Rock’n’Roll-Band unserer Tage. Nicht nur in Europa, auch in den USA gelang ihnen längst der ganz große Durchbruch, für eine europäische Band immer noch eine absolute Seltenheit. Aus der vermeindlichen Diskrepanz zwischen internationalen Arena-Tourneen vor gewaltigen Massen jubelnder Fans auf der einen – und der Abgeschiedenheit ihrer dänischen Heimat auf der anderen Seite schöpfen Volbeat ihre Kraft. Natürlich kommen die meisten Ideen immer noch von Michael, aber insbesondere der US-Gitarrist Rob Caggiano ist zu einer unerlässlichen Stütze geworden. »Inzwischen haben wir uns besser kennen gelernt und sind darüber Freunde geworden«, sagt Caggiano, »das hat vieles leichter gemacht als beim ersten Mal.« Caggiano, der 2013 zunächst als Co-Produzent von »Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies« zu Volbeat gestoßen war, hatte danach auch die damals vakante Position des zweiten Gitarristen übernommen. Zwar spricht er kein Dänisch, aber aus der aktuellen Volbeat-Besetzung ist er nicht mehr wegzudenken, wie Michael sagt: »Wenn Rob eine Idee für einen Mittelteil hat, klingt das automatisch ganz anders. Ich lasse in meinen Entwürfen bewusst Lücken für die anderen, das macht die Songs lebendiger und diverser.«

Auf die kommende Tour freut sich Michael bereits jetzt: »Ich habe die Zeit zu Hause sehr genossen«, sagt er, »aber eins ist vollkommen klar: Sobald ich meine Sachen packe und in den Bus steige, kommt wieder dieses ganz bestimmte Kribbeln.« Das gleiche Kribbeln vermutlich, wie es die Vorfreude auf »Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie« bei uns auslöst. Im April sind Volbeat mit Metallica auf US Tour und headlinen im Juni das legendäre Rock Am Ring/ Rock Im Park Festival und machen auch einen Abstecher in die Zitadelle nach Berlin.

Das Album erscheint als Doppelvinyl, Standard CD, Digipack mit Bonus CD und Special Edition Box mit Bonus CD inkl. Patches. Ausserdem gibt es eine Special Saturn Edition inkl. Volbeat Plate.
