Leonard Cohen tourte nie durch Japan. Im Rahmen seiner „Grand Tour“ und der Comeback-Konzertreise ab 2008 war es mal angedacht im Rahmen einer sogenannten „Pacific Ring Tour“ nach vielen nie umgesetzten Ideen 1985, 1988 und 1993 schließlich durch Japan zu touren. Aus der „Pacific Ring Tour“ wurde schließlich nur „The Pacific Tour“ nach Australien und Neuseeland.

2008 begann die Weltwirtschaftskrise, deren auswirkungen noch bis 2009 und 2010 zu spüren waren und auch angedachte Konzerte in Südafrika und Südamerika wurden nicht realisiert. Auch Konzerte in Hawai und Phnom Penh wurden wieder gecancelt. Stattdessen gab es weitere Touneen in Europa, Israel und Nordamerika. Auch bei der folgenden Tournee 2012/ 2013 gehörte „Japan“ nicht zu den „auserwählten“ Stätten. Gründe dafür waren zu meist ökonomische, Japan sei zu teuer, ein Konzert zu geben, hieß es oft.
