The first (and only) release of a complete Leonard Cohen concert to be shot in high definition, Live In Dublin will be available in 3CD/DVD, 3CD/Blu-ray and digital configurations.
Lensed and recorded at Dublin’s 02 Arena on September 12, 2013, Leonard Cohen – Live In Dublin documents a peak performance from the musician’s monumental sold-out 2012-2013 world tour, introducing Cohen’s then-latest release (2012′s Old Ideas) within a major canonical on-stage retrospective.
This state-of-the-art audio-visual HD presentation of a full-length concert from the Old Ideas World Tour delivers this artist’s repertoire (backed by a band recognized by critics as his best ever) with the intimacy, intensity and poetic beauty that have become hallmarks of a Leonard Cohen concert. Live In Dublin recreates the deep emotional connection that audiences felt so powerfully and critics praised universally with five-star reviews during Cohen’s most recent tour.
Live In Dublin is the singer-songwriter-novelist-performer’s second new release this year. Die unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen bieten eine komplette Leonard Cohen-Show vom 12. 2008, im Alter von 74 Jahren, trat der Künstler nach langer Bühnenabstinenz erstmals wieder live auf. IT’S THE SUMMER OF 1971. I’M EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD, HAVE JUST FINISHED MY FIRST YEAR IN COLLEGE AND I’M WORKING ON A BUILDING SITE WHEN I FALL INTO THE ARMS OF MENINGITIS.
It ambles with nie to death’s door but the gate is locked and bolted. In the weeks that follow, my sister’s friend loans me two LPs – Songs of Leonard (‚ohcn and Songs front a Rootn. They play constantly in the darkness and they reawaken me, giving me a glimpse of the world, giving me an inkling of the possibilities of the word.
It’s March 13th 1972,1 see Leonard for the first time, in the old National Boxing
L Stadium in Dublin – a tired, shabby building that takes on new life this spring evening. He does two shows -1 have a ticket for the first but manage to pass myself off äs one of the catering staff for the second. He sings the Irish bailad form Bnrry and the
exhilarating. And, on visit after visit to these shores, Leonard fortifies us and intrigues and warms us with his affection and bis loyalty.
He becomes a part of who we’d like to be; a voice when we are voiceless; a soul when we doubt ourselves. He is the singer on the stage at Lissadell, quoting Yeats äs the night comes on, and he’s a friend at the kitchen table.
And there’s something even deeper that connects us – the spirit in his work. When he sings Iflt Be Yaur Will, we recognise the ghosts of our own famine millions in the souls lost in the Holocaust; when Isaac’s father opens the door, we are nine-year-olds in the shadows of love and uncertainty; we know the drunk in the midnight choir, we’ve heard his fractured song; we connect with the
Catholicism of Leonard’s city and with the ludaism of his imagery, because these are the Symbols on which we were raised. And we love the fact that he came to Ireland at times when no one eise was coming – through the bad days and the good and then, again, the bad. When he teils us, at the 2013 concerts, that he appreciates our buying tickets when budgets are tight, we know he understands the Situation.
And, of course, his honesty and his humour ring bells with us – when he sings Molher, l’m frightened, the llninder and the lightning… he might be a child in a Frank O’Connor short-story; the woman whose dress was bhtc and ‚ silver, whose words werc fcw and small could so easily be a character in a lohn McGahern novel and the close companion who’s a hundred bin wenriiig something tight might have stepped straight out of a Paul Durcan poem. He follows in the Irish bardic tradition – wise man and performer, story-teller and confessor.
We have this reciprocal understanding with Leonard. He brings us the the Paraclcle, the Savioitr’s brcath, ihc liehen hcap and we bring the comradeship of the fellow traveller.
