15 Jahre war er nicht mehr auf Tournee. Neun davon verbrachte er in einem Zen-Kloster. Bis ins Jahr 2013 trat er in über 40 Ländern und auf vier Kontinenten in über 250 Konzerten auf. Nach seinem als „Masterpiece“ bezeichneten Comeback-Album „Old Ideas“ 2012 überrascht er zu seinem 80. Zwei Jahre nach „Old Ideas“, dem erfolgreichsten Album seiner Karriere, veröffentlicht Musiklegende Leonard Cohen ein neues Studioalbum. „Popular Problems“ ist das 13. Werk des kanadischen Sängers und Songwriters und erscheint zwei Tage vor seinem 80. Geburtstag, am 19. September 2014. Die neun Songs des Albums entstanden abermals in Zusammenarbeit mit Songwriting-Partner Patrick Leonard, der die Stücke auch produzierte. Recording und Mixing übernahm Jesse E. String.

Die erste Vorabsingle des Albums trägt den Titel „Almost Like The Blues“ und wird am kommenden Freitag, den 22. August, an die Radiostationen bemustert. Internationaler Preorder-Start von „Popular Problems“ ist bereits heute – wer das Album in einem der Download-Shops vorbestellt, kann sich „Almost Like The Blues“ sofort herunterladen.

Mit „Old Ideas“ war Cohen im Februar 2012 mit Platz vier die höchste Chartplatzierung seiner Karriere in Deutschland gelungen. In acht Ländern erreichte das Album Platz eins, in achtzehn weiteren konnte sich der Longplayer in den Top 5 platzieren.

visual artist whose stunning body of original work has touched the lives of millions with a career

He has sold over 23 million albums, worldwide and published 12 books, the most recent of which was 2006’s ‚Book of Longing‘, a collection of poetry, prose and drawings, which reached #1 on the Top 10 Hardcover Fiction Books in Canada. Mit „Old Ideas“ veröffentlicht Leonard Cohen am 27. Januar 2012 sein erstes Studioalbum seit acht Jahren. Die zehn neuen Songs des mit Spannung erwarteten Albums stellen mit Sicherheit einen Höhepunkt im Schaffen des einflussreichen Singer/Songwriters und Literaten dar.

Obgleich die eigentlichen Aufnahmen zu „Old Ideas“ erst im Januar 2011 begannen, arbeitete Cohen bereits seit Jahren an den Songs und Texten. Zwei der Stücke, „The Darkness“ und „Lullaby“, wurden bereits 2007 aufgenommen, und frühe Versionen waren im Rahmen der vor kurzem zu Ende gegangenen, ausverkauften Welttournee zu hören.

Einige Hinweise, was die Fans von dem neuen Album erwarten können, gab der 77-jährige Kanadier bereits im Oktober 2011 in Oviedo im Rahmen der diesjährigen „Prinz von Asturien“-Preisverleihung. Leonard Cohen hatte dort die höchste spanische Literatur-Auszeichnung erhalten. „Mit dem Älterwerden begriff ich, dass mit dieser Stimme auch Instruktionen einhergehen. Und diese Anweisungen lauten… jammere niemals einfach nur so. Doch sollte jemand jene große, unausweichliche Niederlage, die uns alle irgendwann erwartet, zum Ausdruck bringen müssen, so sollte dies stets innerhalb der strikten Regeln der Würde und Schönheit geschehen.“

Das Album wurde von Patrick Leonard, Anjani Thomas, Ed Sanders und Dino Soldo produziert. Cohen wird dabei von prominenten Background-Sängerinnen wie Dana Glover, Sharon Robinson, den Webb Sisters und Jennifer Warnes begleitet. Das Coverdesign und alle Zeichnungen im Booklet stammen von Leonard Cohen selbst.

„Old Ideas” ist Leonard Cohens zwölftes Studioalbum bei Columbia Records seit 1967. Seine während der Welttournee 2008/2009 mitgeschnittene DVD „Live In London“ erreichte in Deutschland Gold-Status.

Mit seinen meisterhaften Werken als Songwriter, Musiker, Dichter, Schriftsteller und bildender Künstler berührte und inspirierte Leonard Cohen in seiner sechs Jahrzehnte andauernden Karriere Millionen von Menschen auf der ganzen Welt. Sein Umgang mit spirituellen, zwischenmenschlichen, romantischen und politischen Themen beeinflusste unzählige Musiker und Schriftsteller. Bei seiner jüngsten Rückkehr auf die Konzertbühnen wurde er mit einhelligem Lob überschüttet – seine Tour, auf der er zwischen 2008 und 2010 insgesamt 247 Konzerte in 31 Ländern gab, sahen zwei Millionen Fans.
